The Wadi El Rayan Nature

The Wadi El Rayan Nature Reserve is located in a small valley southwest of the Fayoum Oasis. In the Western Desert, Fayoum Oasis is the closest to Cairo. In the Fayoum Oasis, sixty kilometers south of Wadi El-Rayan, you can find Wadi El-Hitan.
The Fayoum Oasis has two artificial lakes connected by a canal and some beautiful waterfalls. The water in these lakes comes from agricultural drainage and a channel connecting the two lakes. The lower lake is less salty, and the plants along its edges are not as thick as those along the upper lake. Because there are lakes in Egypt, ducks come from the south and the north to spend the winter there.
This area protects large areas of the desert that are home to many different ecosystems and geological features. Wadi Rayan is a Jordan desert home to many rare and unusual plant and animal species, fossils of long-extinct animals, and ruins from long-gone civilizations.
With its lakes, waterfalls, and opportunities for water sports, Wadi Rayan is an excellent place for an action-packed day trip from Cairo. You can also go to Whale Valley, which is close by and is part of the same nature preserve. This outdoor museum has fossils of whales that were found in the area.
The contrast between the lagoon’s turquoise waters and the desert’s golden sands is the most striking and memorable thing about Wadi Rayan. With a slow walk through the dunes, you can escape the stress of everyday life and find peace.
Wadi El Rayan may be home to one of the few remaining herds of the scarce slender-horned deer, making it an important place for conservation efforts. Dorcas gazelles are still around in small numbers, but fennec and Rüppell’s foxes are likely to go extinct in the next few years. There are 13 types of birds that live here, 11 types of reptiles, nine types of mammals, and 26 types of migratory and wandering birds. There are 26 different kinds of birds in all. About 188,000 people visit Wadi El Rayan every year, and many leave with memories that will change their lives.
Wadi El Rayan is easy to get to from Cairo, and you can visit it on your way to or from Fayoum for the day. It takes about two hours to get there.
