History of Kitchener Island, Aswan

Kitchener Island is one of the largest islands in the Nile, along with Elephantine Island. It has a characteristic oval shape and can be seen from the eastern shore of Aswan, the nearest city. In the 1890s, the government ceded the Island to Lord Horatio Kitchener, an Egyptian consul, as thanks for his part in the Sudan campaigns. In 1899, this gardening lover moved to his Island, established his home there, and built a botanical garden there, importing species from the most diverse places on the globe –especially from tropical areas–which grew successfully in the Egyptian climate. In 1928, with the help of the Ministry of Agriculture, he converted it into a testing center for plants from equatorial regions. In the south of the Island, there is also a cafe for visitors. Kitchener is reached by ferry or speedboat, leaving from the port of Aswan.
