The richness of Egypt’s gastronomy lies mainly in the fact that it receives influences from both Mediterranean cuisine and African and Middle Eastern recipes. Full Medames (beans )
It is probably the national dish, a shot of energy you must try at least once (it is usually eaten here for breakfast). The broad beans (whole) are the main protagonists of the dish. After crushing them a bit, they are cooked with garlic sauce in a copper pot and served with a good splash of olive oil, parsley, onions, and lemon.
Koshary
Another vegetarian dish is prepared with the most varied ingredients: pasta, tomato sauce, rice, caramelized onions, garlic, lentils, and chickpeas… Come on, a somewhat curious and vibrant mixture you must try on yourself.
Baba Ganoush
Thought by many to have been invented in Lebanon, baba ganoush is a dish you’ll soon find on Egyptian restaurant menus. It is a cream of roasted eggplant, olive oil, garlic, sesame paste ( tahini ), and lemon, similar in texture to hummus, which, like hummus.
Fatteh
It is a dish of meat (beef or chicken), rice, garlic, and layers of dry bread soaked in broth. It is usually cooked in the oven and served with yogurt and dried fruit.
Kofta
They are long spicy meatballs that will make you fall in love at the first bite. Here they are prepared rolled up on a wooden or metal skewer and are usually mixed meat (veal and lamb). It is one of the most delicious dishes you can eat in Egypt.
Mulukhiyah
It is a soup prepared with jute leaves, a plant characterized by a bitter taste that softens once cooked. Garlic, broth, and sometimes cilantro are added to the jute.
Falafel & Shawarma
As in all the countries of the Middle East, it won’t be long before you find restaurants specializing in falafel, chickpea croquettes, spices, and super-rich aromatic herbs. Indeed you have already tried it in your city but believe us: nothing to do with the ones here. And, of course, there is no shortage of shawarmas (what we call kebabs ), sandwiches filled with meat, salad, and sauces. It is undoubtedly one of the cheapest and most famous street foods in Egypt and the world.
Mahshi
Another excellent dish for vegetarian travelers. It consists of baked vegetables. Usually, peppers, courgettes, or aubergine, are stuffed with rice and aromatic herbs (parsley, coriander…). It is accompanied by tomato sauce.
Baklava
Baklava is a puff pastry filled with dried fruit paste (pistachios, almonds, and nuts…).
Kanafeh
It is another dessert that we advise you to try in Egypt. Kanefeh is a cake made from semolina noodles, similar to angel hair, rolled, flattened, and cooked with butter and cream cheese over low heat. Once ready, it is soaked in syrup, and a few ground nuts are added.
